Books
todays question, is 2 parts..
1. What book most influenced your life?
2. What book first got you interested in reading?
I'm sure a lot of people would say "the bible" for the first book, after all it is the most read book in history. It has influenced kings and queens right down to the lowest people in society, the people that have lost all hope in life itself. For the more well read person, I'm sure there is a multitude of a self help books, they could name, my self included. " what color is my parachute ?" or "feel the fear!" comes to mind there . Or it could be any number of books, including children's books.
For me however, the first question, is very clear.. It was a book called "the prophet" by Kahlil Gibran. For those who have not read it, it is about a prophet that is traveling threw a small village, and the people there ask for his wisdom on certain subjects. Each question, is a separate chapter. My favorite part is on joy and sorrow. His therory was simple , you can not feel joy unless you have have felt sorrow. I read this when I was 16 or 17? I'm not sure who turned me onto it, or why, but my mom bought me the book for Christmas that year, and yes, I still have it and continue to read it. it is the most read book in my library.
As for reading, I hated to read growing up. Probably cause I was such a lousy speller. But around 6th grade, our tiny school got a new wing just for the elementary part, it included a gym and a libaray just for us. It was then I learned how helpful a librarian is. After she guided me to the young adult/childrens section, it was there I began to browse the titles.
I found a book called "my side of the mountain" omg, that boy ran away from home and lived in the side of a tree. he knew how to fish, smoke food, live off the land completely. heck, he even trained a eagle. I found that adventure just amazing. I had to read more about a life like that. it was then I stumbled on my way so many storys. My parents (just like me) would always let us buy books at school. Between that and the library, well I had lots to choose from. I went on to read and read so many different kinds of things, its impossible to say, everything from trashy romance novel, to an intense murder, to books about different religions. Anyways I credited this book, cus this was about the time I started going to the library on a regular basis, and love'n it.
